Barrow campus contractor Caddick champions community with social value investment
Work to deliver the new University of Cumbria Barrow Campus is bringing a boost to the local community as main contractor, Caddick, fulfils its pledge to support a range of charitable and education initiatives.
As part of its ongoing commitment to the Barrow-in-Furness community, Caddick has partnered with a range of organisations and charities in the town with over £2,500 donated to good causes.
A school reading programme in the Barrow area led by the Hello Future partnership received a £1,500 donation from Caddick. The money pledged will go towards the purchase of book vouchers for year 7 learners in the Barrow area.
Caddick’s community partnerships also included a £500 donation to Furness Homeless, a charity that provides wrap-around support for adults facing homelessness.

Riding for the Disabled Association based at Sea View Horse Riding also received £500 from the team, which will enable the charity to continue its horseriding sessions for those living with developmental or physical disabilities, promoting confidence, health and wellbeing.
The donations form part of Caddick’s presence in the town as it delivers the University of Cumbria’s new Barrow Campus, situated off Buccleuch Dock Road. Construction work began in early 2024 to deliver a state-of-the-art, dock-side campus including new teaching spaces, offices, catering, landscaping and car parking.
Project management degree apprentices learning with BAE Systems and University of Cumbria have been among learners visiting the construction site, as the campus takes shape.
Elsewhere, Caddick has delivered educational sessions with engineering, multi-trade, plastering and brickwork students from Furness College. Students were given a unique insight into the varied roles required on a construction site.
Furness College students were then given the opportunity to speak with Caddick’s team of experts and gain industry insights, with all students provided with access to sign up for a site visit.
This latest round of investments underscores Caddick’s dedication to creating positive change in the areas in which it builds through its Places For Life ESG strategy. Also forming part of this strategy, Caddick has made three apprenticeships available on its site for local people.
Dave Saville, Regional Managing Director of Caddick Construction Group in North West, comments: “Through our Places For Life strategy we’re committed to creating more than simply the projects we leave behind; we aim to create meaningful impact within the communities in which we work. We’re pleased to be partnering with these fantastic charities as well as institutions like University of Cumbria and Furness College, who all work tirelessly to improve the lives of Barrow locals and give back to their community."
Professor Brian Webster-Henderson OBE, Deputy Vice Chancellor of University of Cumbria, said: “In line with our Towards 2030 strategy, it is our long-term intent of being a community engaged university in Barrow, for the residents of the Barrow region and beyond.
“Driven by our vision and mission of transforming lives and livelihoods through our learning opportunities, applied research and skills focus, we are proud to be working in partnership with others to create new opportunities in Barrow and together address the skills need of county and region, aligning to the significant role that Barrow-in-Furness has in the UK’s infrastructure.”
