Fine art graduates creating new sculpture for Carlisle United Memory Garden

Two University of Cumbria fine art graduates have been commissioned to create a sculpture that will become a reflective focal point for fans, players and the wider community.

As part of the existing partnership between the University of Cumbria and Carlisle United Football Club (CUFC), Institute of Education, Arts and Society graduate artists in residence Paul O’Donohoe and Paul Forsyth are working on their design that will be installed as the centrepiece to Carlisle United’s Memory Garden.

The Memory Garden is a cherished space for fans, friends and families to quietly reflect and remember loved ones and former players. The garden recently expanded to a second level, and this project aims to make the next chapter by installing a sculpture that visually embodies the club and becomes a focal point for collective reflection.

A community-led initiative, the Carlisle United Supporters Groups (CUSG) have launched a crowdfunder to support the project to create the sculpture. Plans are being drawn up for the sculpture to be unveiled on Saturday 15 November, before the club’s National League home fixture against Eastleigh.

Fine Art graduates Paul Forsyth and Paul O’Donohoe (pictured l-r), said: “We were invited to put forward a proposal for the Memory Garden as part of the university’s ongoing partnership with Carlisle United. One of the things that we especially aimed to include in our work was something that was both unique and representative of both Carlisle and Carlisle United.”

They added: “We have especially enjoyed engaging with the supporters and the Heritage Group, and being able to reflect on the club’s rich heritage, always carried along with the loyalty and enthusiasm of the fans. More than anything, we wanted to create a sculpture that honours the past, but which also looks forward with hope to the glories and successes still to come.”

John Kukuc, Carlisle United Supporters Groups Chair said: “This is a tremendous opportunity for fans to contribute towards something very special. In this garden, memories bloom eternal — where every leaf whispers the names, the cheers, and the legacy of those who made this club more than a game. Forever part of our team, forever rooted in our hearts.”

The crowdfunder aims to raise £2,500 to fund the design and creation of the sculpture. Donations are being accepted through Crowdfunder UK until 1 December 2025.

The University of Cumbria and Carlisle United Football Club signed a Memorandum of Understanding in spring 2024 pledging to work together on areas of common interest to support the community and the development of higher-level skills for the region.
