First British Astronaut Helen Sharman Inspires Cumbrian Students
The University of Cumbria and the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine (PCSM) welcomed Helen Sharman CMG OBE, the first British astronaut, to Cumbria as part of a series of STEMM outreach visits across local schools.
Sharman’s visit was aimed to inspire young people to consider futures in science, engineering and the growing opportunities in healthcare and medicine now available within the region.
Throughout the week, Helen has delivered talks to students from Whitehaven, Carlisle and Maryport sharing insights from her career as a scientist and astronaut and highlighting the breadth of opportunities that STEMM subjects can unlock.
Designed for Year 10 to Year 13 students, the sessions included guidance on university pathways, engineering careers, student life and the skills and qualities needed to thrive in science‑based professions.
Speaking about her work, Helen Sharman said:
“STEMM subjects keep so many doors open for young people. Whether it’s engineering, medicine, or careers they don’t yet know exist, I want students to understand that their options are wide and that places like the University of Cumbria and PCSM are creating incredible opportunities right here on their doorstep.”
Helen met with students at Trinity School in Carlisle for interviews and photo opportunities to mark the end of her first visit to Cumbria.

The Pears Cumbria School of Medicine was established in a unique partnership between the University of Cumbria and Imperial College London, with generous philanthropic support from the Pears Foundation. This development marks a transformative milestone for healthcare education across the North West.
Helen’s extensive outreach work at Imperial College London aligns closely with PCSM’s mission to widen participation and boost aspirations among young people from underserved or rural regions.
Her talks demonstrate how STEMM subjects can lead to a wide range of careers, including medicine and reinforce the message that students from Cumbria can pursue high‑quality medical training without leaving the county.
