Dream Placement 2026-3

Local students gain first-hand experience at University of Cumbria

Two ambitious students, Jacob from Ulverston Victoria High School and Orla from Dallam School, spent their February half-term on a week-long Dream Placement at the University of Cumbria’s Barrow campus, gaining first-hand insight into university life while developing and exploring key skills.

Throughout their placement, Jacob and Orla met colleagues from across the university, from senior leadership teams, including Professor Brian Webster-Henderson OBE, Deputy Vice Chancellor, to academic staff and professional services, learning how different departments work together to support students and the wider community. The experience combines both academic and practical elements, offering insight into professional working life as well as the day-to-day realities of university study.

The placement is designed to build confidence in professional environments while helping participants develop a stronger understanding of their personal strengths and values. It broadens awareness of career pathways and opportunities, inspires young people to set meaningful goals for their futures, and encourages independent thinking and leadership. For many students, this experience represents their first step into a professional workplace.

Dream Placement is a unique six-month programme delivered across Cumbria for young people aged 16-18 by the Centre for Leadership Performance. It brings together businesses and young people to provide meaningful development opportunities. For many participants, the highlight of the programme is a week-long industry placement during February half-term, where leadership is seen in action and future career prospects become clearer.

By welcoming Jacob and Orla, the University of Cumbria continues its commitment to supporting young people across the region and investing in the workforce of tomorrow. Through programmes like Dream Placement, Cumbria’s future leaders are given the confidence and aspiration to take their next steps.

Jack Todd, Student Recruitment and Outreach Officer at University of Cumbria said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome the students to our Barrow campus as part of the Dream Placement programme. Opportunities like this give young people invaluable insight into both university and professional life, while allowing us to highlight the wide range of roles and experiences that contribute to our vibrant academic community. We are proud to support initiatives that build confidence and help develop the future talent of Cumbria.”

Jacob said: “I think these opportunities are important for young people because it gives people a small idea of what they are getting themselves into after school. With these experiences you can find out what you do and don’t like in order it narrow it down on what you want to pursue. Everyone made me feel welcome. The people are friendly and open for conversation.”

Orla said: “I think these opportunities are important as they offer a chance for students to experience possible career prospects which may lead to developments in aspirations for the future. I developed my confidence, particularly when speaking with new people and pushing my ideas – getting involved in situations outside of my comfort zone. I also developed my independence. It’s a good opportunity to develop skills, meet new people and gain insight to how a business functions.”
