North West Ambulance Service and University of Cumbria confirm paramedic apprenticeship partnership extension

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) and the University of Cumbria are pleased to jointly announce the award of a new contract for the delivery of the Paramedic Degree Apprenticeship programme.

Renewing this month, it secures a further five-year partnership supporting the development of the paramedic workforce across the North West.

More than 600 NWAS staff have taken the opportunity to progress into qualified paramedic roles in the five years since the relationship started in 2021.

Richard Ward, head of the Centre of Excellence in Paramedic Practice at the University of Cumbria, said: “Our university is recognised and is proud to work with partners to address sector, regional and national skills needs, particularly in areas of frontline and public services like the NHS.

“Our paramedic degree apprenticeship is one of the strong examples demonstrating this strength, working with industries and sectors to upskill and reskill the workforce with our place-based approach supporting our graduates and communities to thrive now and in the future.

“This has led to the University of Cumbria being recognised as one of the top five universities in the country and again best in the North West for graduate employability outcomes, highlighting how we play a vital part in preparing our students for the world of work and their progressing careers.

“We are deeply proud of our long-established relationship with the North West Ambulance Service and are pleased to secure preferred provider status into the future for the Paramedic Degree Apprenticeship.”

The programme continues to combine academic study and practical learning with teaching provided through a blend of face-to-face and online methods, alongside in-person practical sessions at university campuses.

Under the new contract, training will now be delivered across two locations, improving accessibility for learners across the North West.

Training will take place at the University of Cumbria’s Lancaster campus and at facilities provided by Liverpool Hope University. This responds to feedback from previous cohorts about some of the travel and accommodation challenges they faced.

Vinny Romano, NWAS Consultant Paramedic for Education, said: “The degree apprenticeship is a significant element of our workforce strategy, providing a structured route for existing Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) to achieve professional registration, develop clinical skills and achieve their own degree qualification while they continue to work.

“The last five years have been a great success for both parties. The renewed partnership ensures continuity of high-quality training, allowing us to continue to nurture and develop the talent we already have.

“Seeing our apprentices progress to become registered paramedics is a fantastic achievement. We are incredibly proud of our graduates and the contribution they make to supporting our patients and communities across the North West.”
