Team Barrow leader visits new University of Cumbria campus
Dr Simon Case, the newly appointed Chair of Team Barrow’s delivery board, which is overseeing the area’s £200million transformation fund, has visited the University of Cumbria’s Barrow campus for the first time.
During his visit (21 Feb), he had the opportunity to witness first hand the progress of the university's development and hear from both University of Cumbria and BAE Systems about their shared vision for the future, focused on addressing the town's needs and aspirations at a meeting held at BAE Systems Submarines Academy for Skills and Knowledge (SASK).
The University of Cumbria is playing a key role in shaping Barrow’s future by offering accessible higher education that aligns with the region’s strategic goals. Addressing historical barriers to higher education, such as travel, time, and funding, the campus enables local students to experience university life without the need to leave the area, making education more accessible. The university has co-created undergraduate programmes with local partners to support Barrow’s role in the UK's infrastructure and drive its economic and social development through tailored workforce education.
This not only enhances opportunities for individuals but also supports local businesses in upskilling their workforce. The university’s presence symbolises Barrow’s transition into a university town, providing a foundation for future success and inspiring generations to come.
Team Barrow is a collaborative effort consisting of central government, Westmorland and Furness Council and BAE Systems. It is focusing on revitalising Barrow and driving its long-term economic and social transformation, through a campaign named Barrow Rising. Through the £200million fund, the initiative is focused on fostering innovation, enhancing skills development, and improving local infrastructure. The goal is to create a sustainable future for Barrow, supporting its people and industries by offering new opportunities and advancing the town’s position as a hub of excellence in advanced manufacturing, education, and technology.
Dr Simon Case said: “Barrow is a national asset. Walking around the University of Cumbria site, it is fantastic to see the beginning of the new chapter in the town’s history. One where Barrovians can access world-class university education on their doorstep. The Barrow campus is going to be an amazing place for our future projects managers, nurses, engineers, and computer scientists to learn, develop and spread their wings.”
