University of Cumbria apprentices raise awareness and donations for Mission Christmas and Windermere Food bank.

A group of University of Cumbria, second year students from the Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship, at the Ambleside campus have been taking part in a charity project.  The two apprenticeship teams decided to support two different charities Cash for Kids: Mission Christmas and Windermere & District Food bank.

As part of their project management module, the apprentices were tasked with raising awareness of their chosen charity and setting a campaign for donations.

Cash 4 kids: Mission Christmas aim to provide children living in poverty across Cumbria & South-West Scotland with gifts for Christmas. Cumbria and District food bank aim to give nutritionally balanced food and support to people experiencing emotional or financial crisis.

The apprenticeship group, which consists of employees from North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, BAE Systems, Westmorland group, Gilpin Hotel and Simon Rogan restaurant, worked well together and use their skills learned during the module in practise. Each group engaged  their work place and local communities to set up some collection points for their chosen charities to collect toys and food donations. The generosity was overwhelming, with over 200 toys and gifts, estimated at a valued £2,000 and over 300 food items donated.

Nikki Dawson, Lecturer at the University of Cumbria commented, ‘I am unbelievably proud of the apprentices and what they have achieved. Not only have they raised awareness and donations for their charities, but they have learned valuable skills through the project planning experience’.

“It is been fantastic to fundraise for our local charity while learning through the project management module and we never thought we will as a group be able to make so much in such a short time”, Laura Street (Level 5 apprentice. Mission Christmas team)
