University of Cumbria’s Vice Chancellor appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Cumbria

Professor Julie Mennell, University of Cumbria’s Vice Chancellor has today (Friday 29 April) been appointed as one of six new Deputy Lieutenants for the County of Cumbria.

In the United Kingdom, a Deputy Lieutenant is a Crown appointment and one of several deputies to the Lord-Lieutenant of a lieutenancy area. The role of the Deputy Lieutenants is varied and they act as the Lord-Lieutenant's "eyes and ears" within local communities and advise him/her more generally.

Announcing the news today, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mrs Claire Theresa Hensman said:  “I am delighted to appoint six new Deputy Lieutenants to the county to assist me in my duties as the Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria.

“I have a number of Deputy Lieutenants located around the county who have a wealth of experience in connection with voluntary organisations, the Armed Forces and all other aspects of life in Cumbria”.

Vice Chancellor at the University of Cumbria since 2016, Professor Mennell is also Director of the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership Board and Co-Chair of its People, Employment and Skills Strategy Group; a member representative for the Energy Coast University Technical College; a member of the Barrow and Carlisle Town Deal Boards and Barrow Major Projects Board and a Tullie House trustee and Chair of its Audit Committee. Nationally Professor Mennell is also Chair of the Cathedrals' Group of Universities and a member of the MillionPlus university group.

Speaking about her appointment, Professor Mennell said: “The University of Cumbria was established in Cumbria for a reason, and this drives us.

“To positively impact on our students, to increase higher education participation in our county, to address higher-level skills, sector and place needs, to co-create and apply new knowledge and to positively embrace our civic responsibilities.

“I am delighted to be appointed as one of six new Deputy Lieutenants for the county of Cumbria.

“I look forward to supporting Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mrs Claire Theresa Hensman in her work to celebrate Cumbria, serve its communities - and contribute positively to its future.”
