University of Cumbria Sponsors the 20th Love Barrow Awards as it prepares to open its doors to students in September

The University of Cumbria is proud to have sponsored the 20th Love Barrow Awards, a celebration of the individuals, groups, and organisations that make a significant difference to the Barrow community.

The university was honoured to support the Oak Tree Award, which embodies values that closely align with the university’s own ethos of community, growth, and resilience.

The Oak Tree Award honours those who contribute to strengthening and supporting Barrow, and its symbolism—reflecting long-term progress and connection—mirrors the university’s vision for the region. Launched in the wake of the pandemic and the planting of the oak tree in Barrow Park, the award serves as a tribute to the spirit of the community, which continues to grow stronger each year.

The University of Cumbria’s new Barrow campus, set to offer transformative education and skills development for local people, is already making an impact in the region. By supporting the Oak Tree Award, the university is not only acknowledging the hard work of local individuals and groups but also celebrating the spirit of progress that is so central to Barrow’s future.

The winner of this year’s Oak Tree Award, Barrow Lifeboats, was celebrated for outstanding contributions to the community and their dedication to making Barrow a better place for all. Barrow Lifeboats have been in operation for 160 years and during that time have covered 1,369 services and saved 367 lives.

Professor Brian Webster-Henderson OBE, Deputy Vice Chancellor said: "We were delighted to support the Oak Tree Award, which truly represents the values of community, growth, and resilience. This award is not only a recognition of those who have strengthened Barrow but also a reflection of our own role in supporting long-term progress in the area. Our new campus will provide a direct contribution to education and opportunities, ensuring that Barrow continues to thrive."

Supporting the Love Barrow Awards reflects the University of Cumbria’s commitment to integrating into the community. As Cumbria’s university, we are proud to highlight the exceptional individuals and groups who make Barrow such a vibrant place to live. Our involvement in these awards allows us to recognise the hard work and dedication of those whose contributions often go unnoticed, helping shape Barrow’s bright future.
