University of Cumbria supports the Love Barrow Awards

The University of Cumbria was proud to sponsor the Oak Tree Award at the 2026 Love Barrow Awards, a celebration of the individuals, groups and organisations that make a significant difference to the Barrow community. The university was honoured to once again support the Oak Tree Award, which embodies values that closely align with the institution’s ethos of community and growth.

The Oak Tree Award recognises those who contribute to strengthening and supporting Barrow, and its symbolism, reflecting long-term progress and connection, mirrors the university’s vision for the region. Launched in the wake of the pandemic and the planting of the oak tree in Barrow Park, the award continues to serve as a tribute to the enduring spirit of the community, which grows stronger each year.

The University of Cumbria’s Barrow campus, which offers transformative education and skills development opportunities for local people, continues to play an important role in the region. By supporting the Oak Tree Award, the university not only recognises the hard work of local individuals and groups but also celebrates the spirit of progress that is central to Barrow’s future.

The winner of this year’s Oak Tree Award, BookTastic, has been recognised for its outstanding contributions to the community and its dedication to making Barrow a better place.

The organisation works to inspire children to develop a love of reading by hosting festivals in communities where many young people have never owned a book. This year’s festival will take place at Barrow Town Hall from 16 to 20 June, featuring storytelling sessions, live author events and free book gifting for children aged four to eight, with a particular focus on those growing up in poverty.

The event is part of a wider initiative to encourage reading among children. A 2023 report from the National Literacy Trust found that reading enjoyment among children who participated in BookTastic events increased significantly, rising from 34 per cent to 74 per cent.

Professor Brian Webster-Henderson OBE, Deputy Vice Chancellor, said:
"We are delighted to support the Oak Tree Award, which celebrates the individuals and organisations who make such a meaningful difference to the Barrow community. The symbolism of the oak tree reflects growth, resilience and long-term progress, values that are at the heart of our commitment to the town.

Our Barrow campus has been established to ensure that people in the area can access higher education and develop the skills they need without having to leave their community. By creating these opportunities locally, we hope to raise aspirations, support people at every stage of their lives, and help ensure Barrow continues to thrive for both current residents and future generations."
