University welcomes Head of Supply Chain Solutions as a Professor of Practice
Dr John Sidney, former Head of Supply Chain Solutions at Sellafield Ltd, has been appointed as a Professor of Practice in the Institute of Business, Industry and Leadership at the University of Cumbria.
Dr Sidney joined Sellafield Ltd, formerly BNFL, in 1989 and has held a number of roles ranging from commissioning radiometric measurement systems, through socio-economics to a range of commercial roles. He has also been committed to the social and economic life of the community, especially in the field of education and development as a champion of STEM, a governor of Furness College and as Cumbrian chair of Young Enterprise and the leadership development charity Common Purpose.
Dr Sidney will take up the position as a Professor of Practice in Supply Chain Logistics and Procurement this month. His appointment recognises his vast experience of working in the nuclear industry and it is closely aligned to the university's Project Academy for Sellafield contract which delivers project management qualifications in the nuclear sector. This appointment also reflects how the University of Cumbria is further strengthening links with key industrial partners such as BAE Systems alongside the existing partnership with Sellafield Ltd.
Professors of Practice are experts in their field, recruited to enhance the curriculum, experience and environment provided for students and staff. Dr Sidney’s role will provide staff and students with a deeper understanding of the application of supply chain management and he will work to promote the integration of academic scholarship with practical experience. Professors of Practice help to bridge the gap that can exist between academia, research and industry.
Reflecting on his new appointment at the University of Cumbria, Dr Sidney said “My experience at Sellafield has been central to this appointment, I’ve been fortunate to work in a fantastic environment with a number of opportunities to develop and expand my knowledge. I’m very excited to join the team at the university and further strengthen my academic experience in a field I feel so passionately about. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout this experience.”
