Fulfilling our mission: Supporting People, Place & Communities

I was part of the original project to establish the University of Cumbria, with the aim of raising aspiration and attainment in the Cumbrian community, and contributing positively to the Cumbrian economy, whilst supporting and enhancing the diverse population centres of the county. Sixteen years on, I can say with confidence and pride that the University has achieved all of these aims, and is continuing to build on the achievements to date. Local people talk with pride and ownership of “their” university, study by mature students in fields of staff shortage is vibrant, and as the Chair of Governors of a secondary school, I see both parents and pupils increasingly understanding that study at university will enhance their own and their children’s futures. The University of Cumbria remains true and committed to the original vision.
